iOS16: What does this mean for Apple CarPlay?

With iOS16, there will also be a major CarPlay update. Apple is determinedly pursuing its strategy of deeper and more extensive integration of CarPlay into the car. So far, it is only a “mirroring” of the Apple screen. In the future, Apple could become an even more essential part of the car operating systems.

Until then, the existing concept will be supplemented and rounded off sensibly. So what can CarPlay users expect under iOS 16?

New iOS16 CarPlay Features

As in previous versions, new app categories are added in iOS 16.

So far, Apple has supported apps for ordering groceries, parking, and charging electric vehicles.

With the update, Apple expands its range with apps for driving tasks. These are apps that you can use to call a towing service, get assistance with toll roads, or get further information about the course of the road.

Furthermore, fuel apps will be available to you in the future. Against the backdrop of the current situation, this is a welcome addition.

CarPlay to handle payment at the gas station

The fact that Apple, at least in the U.S., continues to expand the ecosystem around CarPlay is shown by the fact that it will be possible to pay at gas stations via CarPlay in the future.

Reuters reports that Apple unveiled this feature as part of WWDC 2022 in early June. It should make it possible to tap an app to navigate to a gas pump and buy gasoline directly from the screen in the car.

U.S. gas station operator HF Sinclair, which distributes 1,600 gas stations in the United States, said it plans to introduce the new functionality in the coming months.

It is still unclear whether and when this function will be introduced in Germany. In addition, the lion’s share of revenue in Germany, in particular, comes from the convenience sector at service stations. This could lead to a drop in sales.

What’s next for CarPlay?

Apple’s strategy with CarPlay is clear. Since the car’s software will always play a dominant role, Apple will try to secure its share here. It remains to be seen whether the car manufacturers will allow themselves to be reduced to pure hardware suppliers and leave the lucrative business with data and value-added services to Apple & Co.

Whether the aftermarket devices will also experience a more robust integration into the car operating systems via CarPlay. In any case, the CarPlay car radios will also experience functional enhancements.
